Don’t abolish the Mayor. Get rid of Sadiq Khan instead.
PLUS: A new knife crime victim every 30 minutes in London
With the weather really starting to warm up, the East London Docklands are starting to look more and more picturesque – and so did the scenes which greeted Thomas Turrell as he finished his 150-mile walk around the London Loop. Read more below – but first…
Don’t abolish the Mayor. Get rid of Sadiq Khan instead!
Neil Garratt wrote an op-ed for City AM this week, in which he argues that, for all of Sadiq Khan’s flaws (of which there are many), a city as important as London still needs a Mayor. Having a Mayor means London has leadership on large projects that require co-ordination between different bodies and Boroughs, such as transport projects or the Olympics. And having a Mayor means Londoners know who is in charge – and can get rid of them.
The Roundabout Refurbishment that almost never was
Keith Prince has been the Assembly Member for Havering & Redbridge since 2016 and has been campaigning on the issue of the Gallows Corner roundabout since then. Nearly a decade later, and work is finally beginning to refurbish this much-used junction. But this wasn’t always on the cards: TfL, chaired by Sadiq Khan, originally wanted to replace the junction with traffic lights. We are glad that Keith’s campaign meant that this did not happen.
Feeling “loopy” about London’s Green Belt
Thomas Turrell AM has been walking the London Loop – a 150-mile trek – over the last few weeks, in order to draw attention to the importance of London’s Green Belt. Our city’s green spaces are precious: not everyone can afford countryside retreats or exotic holidays, but the Green Belt ensures that every Londoner has access to genuine wilderness within a reasonable distance of their home. And with the current Government seemingly waging war on our green spaces, this campaign is more important than ever.
Knife crimes occur every half an hour under Sadiq Khan
Knife crime is always a hot topic in London, and it seems that the news channels are showing us an increasing number of victims. Even more worryingly, whilst every life lost to knife crime is a tragedy, many of these victims are young schoolchildren who should be worrying about next week’s chemistry test – not whether they will be the next to become a victim.
We can reveal that knife crimes are so frequent in London as to happen on average of once every half an hour. This sobering statistic shows that there is much more Sadiq Khan needs to do to reduce violent crime. He could start with reversing his decision to axe 1,700 police officers and staff – surely the wrong choice at a time like this.
