KHAN’S LATE SUMMER HOLIDAY
The Mayor of London is in New York but his climate record is in shambles.
What a week it has been for Sadiq Khan, travelling first to Liverpool for a whistle-stop visit to Labour Party Conference, before flying to New York with his photographer and videographer to talk about the climate and apparently make the case for London. If only someone had been there to advise him that it’s Whitehall he should be appealing to, not the UN….
KHAN SKIPS CONFERENCE TO FLY TO CLIMATE TALKS
Rather than trying to tell Labour Party bigwigs all about the great work he’s doing - and maybe make the case for Sir Keir to give him the money he’s spent 8 years asking a Conservative Government for, this week the Mayor ditched the annual party conference - the first Labour Conference in Government for 15 years - to tour New York talking about how great Times Square is and the importance of reducing emissions if we are to meet our 2030 targets. Neil Garratt, City Hall Conservatives Leader, spoke to ITV about what a missed opportunity for Londoners it was:
METE COBAN DEFENDS 40,000 AIR MILES AT ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE
Meanwhile in City Hall, Labour’s new Deputy Mayor for the Environment and Energy, Mete Coban, was quizzed by Conservative Assembly Member Thomas Turrell, AM for Bexley & Bromley, about his 40,000 air miles racked up last year. Mete defended these as essential for the work he was doing, but a cursory glance at his Instagram suggests Mr. Coban may have a very different definition of “work trip” to than most people. Check out Mete’s travel snaps below in his “What I did on my Holidays” back-to-school presentation:
SADIQ KHAN SET TO MISS 2030 EMISSIONS TARGET
Labour Conference isn’t the only thing we found out that Sadiq Khan is missing this week. Speaking to an audience in New York he optimistically told the crowd that he will meet his 2030 targets, but when our Assembly Members asked his officials the same question at the Environment Committee, they didn’t seem to agree. Asked on a scale of 1 to 10 how likely the Mayor was to meet the 2030 goal, officials gave a hopeful “2-3” out of 10 probability of doing so. Awkward.
CITY HALL CONSERVATIVES GO TO CONFERENCE
All-in-all, a pretty rough week for the Labour Mayor, but the real people who lose out are the people of London who deserve far better. We’re at Conservative Party Conference next week, speaking on panels about housing, nightlife, immigration, transport, the environment and more; making a positive case for the Conservative alternative for London. But before all that, we’re kicking off Conference with ConHome at 2:30pm on Sunday 29th in Hall 6, with our own event where Assembly Members will answer questions about what needs to be done to win back London and restore it to its former glory. Don’t miss it!
