SADIQ KHAN, RACHEL REEVES AND LABOUR JUST DON’T GET THE ECONOMY
PLUS: Sadiq Khan’s police cuts, potholes and congestion woes.
It’s increasingly feeling like Sadiq Khan & the Labour Government are going round in circles. Higher taxes, police cuts and reduced funding for infrastructure creates low growth. Low growth pushes the Labour Government to raise taxes. Higher taxes creates lower growth… and so on.
Read below to find out what we’ve been up to this week to try and save London from this spiral of doom!
Sadiq Khan’s Crime Czar is clueless about the impact of his police cuts
As fears mount over the extent of the police cuts which Sadiq Khan will soon choose to make, Susan Hall AM had one simple question for Sadiq Khan’s Deputy Mayor for Police & Crime: when will the assessment of the impact of the police cuts be published?
Sadly, as you can see from the video below, even this question proved beyond the Deputy Mayor. It might seem like common sense to assess the damage the cuts will cause before going through with the plans, rather than blindly cutting and hoping for the best, but it seems like even Sadiq Khan himself has no idea the damage which he will cause to Londoners’ lives and livelihoods.
Sadiq Khan’s “unambitious” Silvertown Tunnel plans let down East London
For the first time in over 100 years, from 7th April, drivers will have to pay to use the Blackwall Tunnel. But unlike in Dartford and Thurrock, where a well-considered exemption scheme allows those most affected a number of discounted or free crossings, Sadiq Khan has overcomplicated the new exemption scheme to the point where there have been very few applicants.
What’s more, the original plans from 2012 included further crossings – one connecting Belvedere with Rainham, and another Galleons Reach to Beckton. These extra crossings would have spread traffic out and reduced congestion across East London, but the watered-down plans mean that all traffic will still have to use the Greenwich Peninsula.
“It’s gonna be a bumpy ride!” Sadiq Khan blocks pothole funding
As part of the budget setting process, we wanted to put forward practical, nonpartisan ways to improve Londoners’ lives. One of Londoners’ biggest bugbears is the state of our roads. Potholes cause big damage to cars and make our roads more dangerous for drivers, cyclists and even pedestrians. That’s why we proposed a fully-costed amendment to create a £15m pothole repair fund – but Sadiq Khan’s Labour allies blocked it.
We will continue to push for practical ways in which we can improve our city.
Alessandro Georgiou AM: Reeves and Khan are punishing London’s businesses
Alessandro Georgiou AM has this week published an article which explains how Rachel Reeves’ disastrous Emergency Labour Budget, coupled with the Government’s anti-business rhetoric, are leading us further into economic turmoil.
In fact, the situation is so bad that 70 retail bosses including the likes of Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s have voiced their concerns in an open letter to the Chancellor.
