Wins in Westminster & Labour infighting at City Hall
It’s been a great week for London Conservatives... London Labour? Far less so.
Dear Fellow Londoner,
They say a week is a long time in politics, but that really has been stretched to its limits this week with the flurry of news coming out of the capital. Scroll down for some of the updates - as well as the latest video of a Labour Assembly Member lambasting Sadiq Khan’s newest Deputy Mayor…
TIM BARNES WINS WEST END, WESTMINSTER
City Hall Conservatives would like to start by wishing a very big congratulations to Tim Barnes, who won the West End by-election last night in Westminster, returning to the Council. Tim was one of the Conservatives’ excellent London candidates at the General Election, and his win last night signals the beginning of a long road to retaking Westminster Council, the West Central Assembly constituency, and the Two Cities Parliamentary seat. Congratulations again to Tim and the team who have been working so hard to get him over the line!
WEST END WOES FOR SADIQ KHAN
The Conservative by-election win will be a headache for Westminster Labour and Sadiq Khan, who this week announced his plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street in the West End ward. City Hall Conservatives remain committed to the belief that Oxford Street is a London jewel which has been allowed to decline under the Mayor’s watch, and we desperately want to see it restored to its past glory. That said, the Mayor’s track record on delivering with Mayoral Development Corporations (the less said about Old Oak and the London Legacy Corporations, the better, he probably thinks!) leaves us worried that this recent decision to overrule a Labour Council and press ahead with the plans means Londoners won’t get true value for money or speedy results from this plan.
LABOUR INFIGHTING AT CITY HALL - WATCH THE VIDEO!
We couldn’t believe it either. This week City Hall’s Environment Committee got to meet Labour’s new Deputy Mayor for the Environment and Energy, Mete Coban. Before we could even get to our questions, Labour’s own Assembly Members lambasted Sadiq Khan’s new Deputy Mayor after he cut them out of his visits. Watch the fireworks below:
LORD BAILEY EXPOSES LABOUR HOUSING HYPOCRISY
This week at Planning, Sadiq Khan’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development was taken to task by Lord Bailey AM about his willingness to publicly demand money from the previous Conservative Government, but sudden shyness now Labour is in power. It seems Sadiq Khan is no longer standing up for London since Labour won the General Election. Watch the Deputy Mayor’s attempt to answer below:
